TRUE Jewels became even more precious to her nine women owners and provided another vindication of the decision by The Independent Stallion Station to return Brief Truce to the shuttle from Switzerland, after the Irish River son missed 1999 in the wake of his sale by Coolmore. The Toolern Vale nursery's initiative was sparked by Diatribe's Rosehill Guineas win, the horse later adding the Caulfield Cup and beating all but Sunline in the Cox.
True Jewels was a $28,000 purchase from the Sydney Classic by Paul Moroney, the brother of the trainer. He and Michael capped their Melbourne Cup success with Brew, Kerrin McEvoy again the pilot. He worked hard on the filly, and she responded superbly to deny Danehill progeny a third win in four years. La Lagune the least fancied of her sire's triple assault was game in just going under, after looking likely to sweep past the winner and pacemaker Spectatorial in the final 200m. The first three home were always at the head of affairs as the Spectrum colt was able to get away with a slow speed when Obadele was restrained. The favourite, Octagonal colt Lonhro, made good ground for fourth. Fillies ran 1-2 but True Jewel was the first female winner in the three editions since they gained an extra kilo -to 2.5kg over the colts - with the wfa update.
