BACK on the more familiar ground of its 1986 beginnings from 2000m on Australian Cup day for three editions from 1998. Mr Murphy franked the pattern in having too much zip for his rivals, as he had in the now 1500m Alister Clark-Gr.2 lead-up. Lee Freedman had previously won with Mahogany and Flying Spur, equalling the three wins of Military Plume, King's High and Zabeel by the late Colin Hayes. It was Freedman's 90th Gr.1 winner and the 46th for Damien Oliver, who preferred the winner to stablemates Scenic Warrior and Skalato (he also partnered Flying Spur). As with the other back runners, the Freedman pair also found that it has become an increasingly risky occupation as on-pacers continue to dominate major races. Mr Murphy laid up third and grabbed the lead to win by almost two lengths from the promising Neptune's Journey and Outgate. The consistent Fubu ran on solidly for fourth. It was announced a few days later that Skalato had bowed a tendon.
Danehill's 24th individual southern hemisphere Gr.1 winner was a $300,000 Easter yearling. The second foal from Marscay's Dream, a deceased three-quarter sister to T J Stud's Rigoletto, both from the Antico family's also deceased high-profile mare Verdi. Four times Gr.1 placed, Verdi one of three graded winners from Sostenuto daughter Hot Rhythm, the others Shannara and Hot Diggity.
