DESERT Sky surprised with his double-figure odds and raw courage to defeat a hot field to collect his fourth race on end. The three-year-old son of Hurricane Sky led throughout and set a track record 1:21.64 for the 1400m in holding out a luckless Skoozi (Please) by a nose.
The Victoria Derby winner Hit the Roof and Diatribe staged great first-up autumn runs to finish third and fourth. In mid November, Desert Sky was competing in restricted class at Ballarat. The first Gr.1 win for his sire succeeded where Hurricane Sky could not, the chestnut second to Jeune in the 1995 Orr. The second Gr.1 win for Darren Gauci in 24 hours (Sports-Lightning) completed a treble for three-year-olds, the sequence started by Special Dane and continued by Grand Archway and Hurricane Sky's close relative Redoute's Choice.
The last older horse to win an Orr was Saintly at four in 1997, five-year-old-plus winners quite rare in the past decade, Jeune winning at six in 1995 and 1993 winner Durbridge winner at five. Both Saintly and Jeune's victories in the Orr came first start after their Melbourne Cup triumphs.
