SPORTS snapped the Lightning Stakes dominance of three-year-olds, General Nediym, Isca and Testa Rossa having won the previous three. Winner over Falvelon in the 2000 Oakleigh Plate, this second Gr.1 win of Sports, a six- year-old veteran, made him the sixth millionaire galloper bred and raced by Bob and Jack Ingham and trained for them by John Hawkes. This success also reprised the Lightning win of his sire, Zeditave a winner over Special and Clay Hero at three. Closest of that age in 2001 was Nureyev's son St Petersburg, fourth after sharing the pace with Nan Tien and Sports. They took 24.07 for the first 400m, for a gross of 57.02 on the slow track, a time that would win few of the 47 editions on the dry. It made things difficult for back runners such as minor placegetters Black Bean and Easy Rocking. Sports is the best of 10 winners from Buena Shore mare Olympic Flame, also the dam of Graded winners Seika and Medals.
Seika has a juvenile filly by Danehill (named Clothilde), a yearling and foal by Octagonal and is in foal to Grand Lodge. Darren Gauci had also won on Hula Chief (1986).
