Bomber Bill, now five, is the oldest winner of the race since Redelva at seven. The previous winner aged five was River Rough in 1985. Trainer Hec McLaren purchased Bomber Bill for $31,000 at the Sydney Classic on behalf of Vic Schlesniak, and he remains the property of that Perth-based owner. He was consigned to the yearling sale by breeder Joe O'Gara who stands Bomber Bill's sire Air de France (USA) at his Tobermory Stud near Goulburn in New South Wales. Bomber Bill is a grandson of Special, a grand mare and winner of the Lightning and Flemington's Group I handicap sprints. She did not contest this race.
McLaren prepared Bomber Bill to an unbeaten seven-start juvenile season which included the final running of the Karrakatta Plate as a Gr.1. Bomber Bill then came east and was prepared by John Sadler before being passed to Russell Cameron. So Gorgeous, from the stable of another Aquanita Syndicate trainer, Dan O'Sullivan, was sent out a 9/4 equal favourite with the other three-year-old Scenic Warrior. She was never dangerous after a slow start and Scenic Warrior tried hard to become Brave Warriorıs second Gr.1 winner after Show a Heart, and break Lee Freedman's exasperating run of placings in what formerly was the William Reid Stakes. Bomber Bill had too much zip, however, after Stephen Arnold cosied him up inside the leaders from the volatile rails draw. The slow time was also influenced by a damp track. Miss Pennymoney, the 2000 winner, was never a factor despite jumping on terms.
