Northerly left his rivals without excuses as the least experienced runner and after being trapped wide just off the speed from the 13 gate. Danny Miller upped the ante in challenging Umrum for the lead well before the home turn. Northerly repelled a determined challenge from Old Comrade in the straight. Umrum's conqueror in the Fruit 'n Veg wfa could not sustain her long run and Northerly came away to win clearly, giving the oldest jockey in the race his second Railway success - to go with his win on Jungle Dawn in 1986. It also gave long-serving WA sire Serheed his second Gr.1 winner, the first with 1998 WA Derby winner Kim Angel, a major winner in Singapore in 2000. Going into the mile, Northerly had won three from five, part-owner Fred Kersley deciding that the Oakland Park-bred four-year-old was ready for his Gr.1 debut on his success in the R.J. Peters Stakes-Gr.3 seven days earlier, that race named for the part-owner of Old Comrade. North Bell, since passed from the Duncans to Robert Clemenger and has slipped and missed to Rory's Jester in the past two seasons, but the resume of the Bellwater daughter is splendid with two graded winners from four of racing age, the first talented distaffer Northern Song, by the previously mentioned Rory's Jester.
