Old Comrade overcame his inexperience to defeat the ultra-honest and talented campaigner Umrum at the second edition of Ascot's lone wfa since it was cut from 1800m and shifted back from late November.
The winner is another good horse by the redoubtable but sometimes unsung Old Spice, the Clairefontaine stalwart celebrating this Gr.1 success when his daughter Old Money added the C.B. Cox Stakes one race later, this one of four Australian graded races at 2400m marred by an horrific race smash.
Old Comrade and Old Money both prepared for Bob and Sandra Peters by Lindsey Smith. Old Comrade had run on solidly when second to Umrum in the Lee Steere Stakes-Gr.2 at their previous outings 14 days earlier and appreciated the experience and additional 200m to turn the tables after being placed in midfield by Paul Harvey.
Old Comrade was the umpty-umpth Gr.1 success for Bob and Sandra Peters, who also bred this gelded son of Belgravia. The dam a half-sister to Penny Lane, the Beau Sovereign mare to foal Strickland and Belmont Stakes (both Gr.3) winner News Review.
In three subsequent matings with Old Spice, Belgravia has produced two fillies, the juvenile Another Special and has a colt foal. Her first foal, True Believer, lost her first foal to Vain Rancher and then went to Encosta de Lago. Old Comrade's sister Quern has a colt foal by Surtee.
