Testa Rossa was towering in giving this hot field weight and 13 of them a start from the 600m to record his sixth Gr.1 success - which now stretch from the 1000m of the Lightning to the 1600m of the Cantala (now Emirates Stakes) - the VRC date this race back to 1919 but it was actually first run in 1881, as the handicap Coburg Stakes. The Rossa's only attempts beyond a mile resulted in a fourth and sixth in the Cox Plates won by Sunline, but he is certain to be competitive in any race if given another try at 2000m before going to Yallambee. He joins Family of Man and All Shot as winners with 59kg, the most since Aquanita's 59.5kg at his second win in 1961 - All Shot four and the Man five. Overall weight record (since 1919) is held by Amounis at 62.5kg when the champion won for the second time in 1929. Amounis was also the highest weighted four-year-old winner at 61kg (1926). Weasel Will and Crawl produced splendid efforts to place. Umrum, fourth and second in the previous editions, was again fourth, the wet track as rain fell close to the race, blunting the dual Toorak winner's sprint - as it had the previous year when just caught by Bonanova. But Testa slayed them.
