Grand Lodge's first Oaks winner proved a worthy subsitiute for the deceased Unworldly after winning over 1900m at Canterbury 22 days earlier, before a Wakeful Stakes sixth to Lolita Star and Lan Kwai Fong. That Peter Hayes-trained pair filled the placings in reverse order as Lovelorn provided successive Oaks wins to fillies bred and raced by Bob and Jack Ingham. 1999 winner Tributes - by Unworldly's sire Quest For Fame - was bred to Grand Lodge in October. It was the third win for trainer John Hawkes who remained in Sydney, his son Wayne, who heads the Flemington stable, deputising. Fourth dam Never Too Late, was the dam of Lindsay Park stalwart Without Fear after winning English 1000 Guineas-Oaks double. Lovesick, who died in 1998, was purchased by Woodlands for $100,000 at Easter 1991. A previous daughter, Infatuated, has a colt foal by Canny Lad and went to Commands. The Hayes pair were also extremely courageous, particularly the favourite Lolita Star after the crowd got to her. The family quest for this Oaks continues. Dashing Granada and a slightly tired Tanith were also game just outside the placings, 1000 Guineas winner All Time High a one-paced seventh. The Oaks turned a corner for Brett Prebble. He turned down the Derby winner, believing he would be spelled and was a half kilo too heavy for Brew in the Cup.
