LAELIA. 5 wins, 1200m-3218m, SAJC Adelaide Cup-G1. ProducerAlong with sons of Wakeful (Night Watch 1918) and Rose of Kingston (Kingston Rule 1990), this son of Horlicks has the most famous mum in terms of track performance. Sir Tristram's 45th individual Gr.1 winner, Brew was bred by Horlicks' breeder-owner Graham de Gruchy. Prepared by the O'Sullivans for his breeder he won a Kembla maiden before being sold at $NZ110,000 to Paul Moroney, the agent brother of Cup winning trainer Michael Moroney. The eight owners include Andrew Ramsden, the VRC chairman in the syndicate of Gurner's Lane (won 1982) and Paris Lane (2nd 1994). Kerrin McEvoy was his partner on the big day - at 20 the youngest winning jockey since 16-year-old Ray Neville on Rimfire. Brew was 10th in the 1999 Cup when unsuited by slow pace. Fourth to Yippyio in Brisbane Cup and second to him in the MV Gold Cup, Brew just beat the qualifying deadline by winning the Hotham. The ninth Hotham winner to add the Cup, the others Nimblefoot, King Ingoda, White Nose, Dark Felt, Sirius, Foxzami, Baystone and Think Big (1974). Interstellar, the sire of the second-placed Yippyio is related to Brew, his dam Frill, being the grandam of Horlicks. Frill was a sister to Laelia, winner of an Adelaide Cup as a three-year-old filly, to Swift General and to the high class Agrifo - all by Agricola from the celebrated Froth, a winner of both NZ Oaks and the Auckland Cup. Moroney also trained the third horse Second Coming in a field which contained only 10 runners under six years.
