On a day when Nureyev had his first southern hemisphere graded success -with * St Petersburg - his late maturing grandson Oliver Twist collected his second Gr.1 for the season, and lifetime - see also Underwood result for more on his sire Alex Nureyev. Oliver finished powerfully near the fence to cut down the pacemaker, the game Camarena, Greg Childs adapting to the inside section bias perfectly and his mount doing the rest. Brian Mayfield- Smith has him in the best form of his career and the tough six-year-old successfully backed up from a creditable, if distant (10 len) fourth behind Sunline in the Cox Plate seven days earlier. Surface conditions notwithstanding, the Mackinnon quickly franked the Cox form line when the pattern was not dissimilar to the race on the Strathayr. Werribee Cup winner Slavonic was always in the first three on a three day back-up. As a Melbourne Cup guide, the race pointed to the hopes of Freemason (fourth), Hill of Grace (sixth) and Coco Cobanna (eighth). Freemason did best of them in the Cup with a distant sixth, behind the Hotham (SAAB) Handicap winner, Brew.
* St Petersburg, a three-year-old half brother to Jersey Girl and a $700,000 Easter yearling, won the Chivas Regal Stakes-Gr.3.
