A rare double for Bob and Rosemary Scarborough as the owner-breeders of equestrian great Darien Powers (tragically since deceased) won their first Derby five weeks after the grey and Andrew Hoy won Olympic gold in Sydney. Hoy led the field out on Subzero and was able to escort the Scarborough's horse back to them and trainer David Hall. Danzig has four Victoria Derby wins in the past six years as paternal grandsire, since Nothin' Leica Dane kicked-off a Danehill treble. Northern Dancer sireline now has 6-8, that sequence started by Mahogany and carried forward by Universal Prince's three-quarter brother Blevic. Hit the Roof adapted best to the conditions, the slow track again favouring on-pace runners near the inside. He settled sixth, joined in halfway down the straight and accelerated away. Universal Prince railed through late after being held up, his chances diminished by the track and the pattern. Falls the Shadow looked dangerous before his fighting third just ahead of Skalato, courageous from a wide gate to give favourite backers their money's worth. Sale of the Century closed late for fifth. Along with Star of the Realm (1991), Hit the Roof was the least experienced Derby winner since Dulcify (five) with six prior starts. He was also the third straight winner after placing in the Norman Robinson.
